E71 Review

April 24, 2009

Disclaimer: I am NOT an avid mobile phone user. Nor am I verse with the myriad mobile phone models out there.

Using Bluetooth and WiFi on my Nokia E71 was extremely easy. I tried Twitter, Youtube, Times of India, BBC news, Economic Times, Livemint over WiFi and they worked quite well.

I couldn’t quickly find a way to set a recurring alarm! I finally figured out that the menu item to do this is titled “Reset Alarm”. The work “Reset” is used here as a noun rather than a verb! That was confusing. The procedure to set a recurring alarm is to first set a “Quick” alaram after which the “Reset alarm” menu would be available. I was expected to go into this menu and change the properties of the alarm that I set earlier.

The interface to edit contacts felt a bit weird initially. But once I figured it out, it was easy.

I still don’t know how to copy all my contacts from the SIM onto the Phone memory! I can copy it one contact at a time, but not all of them in one go.

I came to know a few new things after reading a few pages from the phone manual. One of them is the cool functionality of Voice commands which works quite well. I had some trouble locating the voice command button, but a quick search on the internet told me where it was.

The “Alt+Tab” equivalent functionality of the “Home” key is very cool! :-)

I tried the bar code reader but it didn’t seem to work; at least with the two barcodes that I tried.

It would be very convenient if it was possible to switch the profile with a mode switch.

GPS worked quite well. :-)
